Finally... a new post

Sunday in the Hood

With his right hand, a young boy pours maple syrup over a pancake; the left waves a piece of sausage semi-rhythmically in the air as the syrup hits his plate.  Across the table sits his Dad, an orange peel obscuring his teeth and forming a brilliant orange smile as he eagerly consumes the fruit that garnishes his breakfast plate... Lunch at Fil's Diner, Hintonburg.

Merry Christmas

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish family, friends, and everyone who reads this, a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season. Regardless of your beliefs, or lack of them, it's a great time to spread good will to those around us. So, from my house to your house - may 2009 bring you love, health, happiness, prosperity and much laughter.

Getting out the Christmas ornaments, sparked my desire to do some holiday macro photography with special lighting.

The deep red balls were the perfect background for the pink tones pearls and remote flashes were perfect to light the pearls and set up the reflection.

It's been a long time...

Hi folks. I'm finally back with a posting.

It was a busy but good summer... despite all the rain we got. I was kept busy and out of trouble with graphic design commissions, photo commissions, and time for myself out wandering with my camera. That was oh so good for the soul!

Best of all, I spent one intensive week just outside of Edmundston, New Brunswick on a photography course with Freeman Patterson, Andre Gallant and 14 other photographers and enthusiasts. We photographed the Edmundston Botanical Gardens, a local scrap yard, and the sun rising over New Denmark about 1.5 hrs from Edmundston. Techniques, philosophy and art of photography were all high on the agenda, and the bonus was taking a road trip with daughter Inika who drove me there and back, and meeting and making new friends through our joint adventure.

To quickly catch you up, I'll post some pics from my summer adventures. Enjoy!

The Art of Darkness

Last evening I went to a vernissage at "La Petite Mort" in Ottawa's Byward Market. It was a group showing of art by grafiti artists from Buenos Aires. Their favoured medium is stenciling rather than the ubiquitous spray painting we see here in Canada. The vernissage was well attended, though I can't say that particular style of art will ever be at the top of my favourites list.

We had planned to make it a night out and came with our cameras, ready to follow up with a photo shoot around the market. The weather was great and the market scene was buzzing with Harleys, Hummers, and all manner of humanity. It was a great shoot and I wound up with a nice variety of shots. This selection has some images from the art show as well as night shots ... hence the title, "The Art of Darkness".

Spring in the Capital

Spring has arrived and with it, fears of flooding. Last weeks temperatures of 11°C - 14°C have really pushed the snow into rapid melt mode that has caused flooding in the city and surrounding regions. With the rain yesterday and today, many locals are worried.

What a Day!

It was Sunday morning, the sun was shining, the snow was melting, and all was right in my world. The day was just right for a walk to the Byward Market and coffee with a friend at Le Moulin de Province, one of my regular haunts.

I found a table, placed my order, and sat quietly with my blueberry mouse and café au lait, soaking in the atmosphere of the market and indulging in one of my favourite pastimes - people watching. As I sipped my coffee three people entered the café and passed by my table. I did a double take. It couldn't be... could it? I watched as the group walked by, becoming more and more convinced about who I had just seen. Take a chance, Joanie, I said to myself. Go over and say Hello. I quickly grabbed my coat and camera and went in search of the party. Thinking they had passed through into the main shopping area, I walked quickly around the shops. No luck there, so I headed back to Le Province. Yes, sitting at a table next to the window was one of the women that I greatly admire. Now what do I do? Do I dare approach and introduce myself? It took almost a full three minutes for me to build up my courage, but I knew this was an opportunity not to be missed. I walked to the table and nodded acknowledgement to everyone there. "Hello" I said to the woman I understood to be an interpreter, "Pardon me for interrupting, but is this lady Kenojuak?" I nodded to acknowledge the woman sitting next to the window. "Why yes, it is." she replied.

YES! I wanted to shout. I was in the presence of Kenojuak Ashevak - celebrated artist and Companion of the Order of Canada. I was like a teenager meeting her favourite rock star. With much effort I pulled myself together, and through her interpreters, told her how much I admired her work - also mentioning that I was the proud to own one of her signed prints, "Preening Loon", from the the 2007 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection. Kenojuak speaks only Inuktitut, and her interpreters kindly passed on my unabashed praise. One expressed surprise and delight that I had recognized her, and the other (possibly her grandson) was filled with great pride as he told me of her achievements. Needless to say, I was in seventh heaven with this chance encounter.

This talented Canadian Inuit elder was born on the land, October 3, 1927, near Cape Dorset (Qikiqtaaluk) on Baffin Island, and is known the world over for her artistic excellence.

Kenojuak was in town to be presented with yet another award by Michäelle Jeanne. She was one of eight recipients of the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, honoured for artistic achievement.

Earlier in the week I had read she would be in Ottawa for the presentation, and idly daydreamed about how wonderful it would be to see her. Little did I know that my daydream would be realized, and more. I wasn't at the award ceremony, but the Universe did provide. It led me to the right place at the right time. I am truly honoured to have met this wonderful woman, artist, and elder, and delighted that I could tell her how much I appreciated her great talent.

Happy St. Paddy's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day! While driving around Ottawa recently I came across this one very Irish family... well at least I hope they are Irish. No matter what you think of the decor, you can't say they aren't enthusiastic. I'll bet they are having one heck of a bit party this weekend.
